If you own a guinea pig, you are probably somewhat on tune with what is required for a guinea pigs diet. You also probably know the importance of vegetables in a guinea pigs’ diet.
While guinea pigs can eat most types of vegetables, there are some that you should steer clear from. You should always do some research online before feeding your guinea pig a new type of food.
In today’s article, we are going to discuss spring mix, and explain whether or not guinea pigs can eat it.
Can guinea pigs eat spring mix?
Yes, guinea pigs can certainly eat spring mix. It can actually be a very beneficial addition to their diet.
As you probably already know, guinea pigs are herbivores. This means that they get 100% of their food from plant sources. Vegetables are essential for guinea pigs because they are high in Vitamin C. Similar to humans, guinea pigs do not produce vitamin C naturally. For this reason, a guinea pig can get pretty sick if they go a couple days without consuming vegetables.
It is also important to remember to wash the spring mix before you feed it to your guinea pig. In some rare cases, parasites can latch onto vegetables and sneak their way into your guinea pig’s cage. If your guinea pig gets exposed to parasites, he/she might develop ringworm.
That being said, I would recommend limiting the amount of spinach you give your guinea pig. Baby spinach is a common ingredient in spring mix, but its not in every formula. Spinach has a high concentration of calcium, which can cause urinary problems for your guinea pig.
Also, while this sounds pretty obvious, you should never feed your guinea pig spring mix that has been topped with dressing. A guinea pig’s digestive system is not able to break down dressing, and your guinea pig will most likely throw up or have diarrhea.
There is no need to panic if your guinea pig consumed a couple spinach leaves. However, it is important to not give them an excessive amount.
How much spring mix should I give my guinea pig?
While it depends on the age and weight of your guinea pig, I would recommend starting out by giving your guinea pig one cup of spring mix. If he/she consumes it quickly, you can give them another half cup.
I would not give more than 1.5 cups of spring mix to your guinea pig in one day.
What is in spring mix?
Spring mix is a collection of leafy green vegetables. While the ingredients are not always the same, some of the main components include:
- Green and Red Romaine Lettuce
- Oak Leaf Lettuce
- Tango Lettuce
- Mizuna
- Chard
- Spinach
- Arugula
- Radicchio
Since spring mix can come with different ingredients, it is always important to look at the label before you feed it to your guinea pig. While guinea pig’s can eat most types of vegetables, there are some that can cause gastronomical problems.
For example, you should make sure to never feed your guinea pig iceberg lettuce. While it is not toxic enough to kill your guinea pig, it can cause digestion issues that will result in diarrhea and intestinal problems.
You should also avoid feeding your guinea pig garlic, onions, and mushrooms. While these are not usually present in spring mix, its important to always keep an eye out.
