Baytril for guinea pigs, also known as enrofloxacin, is a popular antibiotic for pets. While baytril is usually administered to cats and dogs, it can also be given to smaller pets such as guinea pigs. In today’s article, we are going to discuss everything you need to know about baytril and whether it is the right option for your guinea pig.

How does baytril work?

Baytril works by blocking bacterial enzymes from copying DNA cells. Since the enzymes can’t copy the DNA sequence, they are not able to replicate and subsequently die. Baytril essentially ask as a body guard and protects them from being manipulated by bacteria.  

What is baytril used for?

Baytril can treat a wide range of conditions including:

  • Urinary tract issues: These can include kidney stones and other bacteria infections that affect your guinea pig’s urinary tract
  • Respiratory infections: Common illnesses that baytril treats include pneumonia, E. coli, and P. mirabilis
  • Skin infections
  • Yeast infections
  • Fungal infections

How to give your guinea pig baytril?

For starters, it is recommended that your give your guinea pig baytril while they have an empty stomach. Baytril can be administered through an oral tablet and shot, but it is recommend to give guiena pigs baytril through a syringe. Most of the time a veterinarian will administer the first dose so that you have an idea to do it on your own.

It is not recommended to give a young guinea pig baytril, as it can cause a stunt in growth and development.

Baytril dosage chart for guinea pigs

For most guinea pigs, it is suggested to give 10 mg per kg of weight. For example, if your guinea pig weighs 1.5 kgs, you should give him/her 15mg of baytril. While you should follow the instructions from your veterinarian, baytril should generally be given to your guinea pig every 12 hours.

Your vet might recommend giving your guinea pig a larger dose once a day, but this should only be done with their guidance.

While baytril is usually only prescribed for 1-2 weeks, it can be given for longer periods depending on the condition.

Side effects of baytril in guinea pigs

While baytril is a great medication for fighting bacteria infections, it does come at a cost. Baytril does have a long list of possible side effects. However, most of them are pretty minor. The most common symptoms of baytril include:

  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Change in appetite

More serious side effects of baytril include seizures, lethargy, and urine crystals. However, you shouldn’t be worried because these symptoms are rare.

What animals can take baytril?

Aside from cats, dogs, and guinea pigs, baytril can also be administered to rabbits, hamsters, birds, and even turtles.

Can humans take baytril?

No, it is not recommended for humans to take baytril. It is known to cause hallucination and brain damage in humans. For this reason, baytril can only be prescribed to animals.
